About Maccarese

Maccarese is among the largest and most important Italian agricultural firms.

Based in the homonymous location in the Lazio region, the farm has an area of 3,200 hectares, of which 2,400 are cultivated with cereals, protein crops, fodder and vegetables. In addition to agricultural activities, the farm has a 3,600-head dairy cow herd that is one of the largest in Italy, producing 57,000 litres of high quality milk per day, which supplies 15% of the daily consumption of the city of Rome. Finally, two biogas plants were built in 2010 to produce electricity, which are fed using livestock manure and silage produced on the farm.

The company focuses on three business lines:

  • animal husbandry, involving the sale of milk produced by its own herd and the sale of beef cattle
  • agricultural segment
  • biogas production

The issues of biodiversity protection and soil consumption have led Maccarese to collaborate with WWF, which has been made responsible for managing three areas of high environmental value on the estate: terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems covering an area of more than 400 hectares.

Edizione acquires Maccarese

Maccarese becomes a Società Benefit

Investment case

Acquired in 1998, Maccarese is Edizione's first and most significant investment in Italy's agricultural sector, aimed at diversification based on the principles of long-term sustainability. One of the largest agricultural firms in Italy, Maccarese bears witness to the group's philosophy of investing in sound companies in a sector that is deeply rooted in Italy's cultural identity.

ESG approach

In 2021, Maccarese decided to become a Società Benefit, and changed its business purpose. Società Benefit are companies that integrate corporate objectives with a social mission, thus serving as agents of wellbeing in their business environment. These companies pursue a common benefit and are committed to generating value in a responsible, sustainable and transparent manner,  by openly declaring their social commitment in their articles of association and assessing their positive impact on local areas and communities. Maccarese has also joined the UN Global Compact programme, making it the first Italian agricultural firm to develop skills to tackle global challenges relating to sustainability, the environment, human rights, labour and anti-corruption.
